The Scarborough Stingers Minor Bantams won the city AAA baseball championship last Sunday.
The team of 14-year-olds beat out the Etobicoke Titans with a final score of 7-2 at Bond Park in North York.
"In the final game we came out swinging and got out to an early lead," said Scarborough Minor Bantams' coach Larry Hardwick.
Starting pitcher Jack Dennis went five and two-thirds of an inning, sitting down 13 batters.
The team had lost their opening-round match to the Titans. They went on to win against the West Toronto Wildcats 10-2 and faced six-time champs North York Blues. Derek Chiu pitched an outstanding game, and with some great team defence the Stingers beat the Blues 9-5 setting up a three-team tie entering the final two rounds.
Scarborough won the draw for the bye into the final, while the Blues and Titans had to fight it out. The Titans eliminated the Blues, 12-9.
The Stingers will now compete in the Ontario Baseball Association playoff tournament being held in Etobicoke on Labour Day weekend.
The Stingers' Mosquito and Peewee teams also qualified for the provincial championships after their final games last weekend.
The 10-year-old Mosquitoes won a berth in the Ontario Baseball Association's AAA provincial tournament with a 4-3 win in extra innings over the Etobicoke Titans.
They will play in the championship game in Windsor on the Labour Day weekend.
The Stingers season is all but over now, with only the provincial tournaments still to play.
Tryouts for the club's nine AAA teams for players aged 10 to 18, will begin in September.
