Thanking East Yorkers for helping children in need

As chief executive officer of Christian Children's Fund of Canada, I wanted to take this opportunity to personally thank families in East York for their generous support of sponsored children in eight developing countries around the world - India, Sri Lanka, Ghana, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Tanzania, Paraguay and Nicaragua.

After reviewing some recent financial reports, I was humbled by the overwhelming support that East York residents have shown our organization. In 2007, East York residents donated more than $47,000 to the organization and were responsible for sponsoring more than 100 children.

This is a remarkable achievement and residents should take pride in knowing they have directly helped impoverished children, families and communities around the world.

Sponsorships originating from East York not only benefit a child, but his or her family as well. Sponsored children receive access to food, clothing, shelter, medical care, education and school supplies. In addition, the child's family has access to vocational training, job opportunities and farming expertise. The money donated also helps the child's community become self-sufficient by starting sustainable, results-producing projects for the entire community such as building clean water wells and offering small-business training.

East York residents' acts of kindness have provided meaningful change and help to thousands of the world's poor. Visit www.ccfcanada.ca for details. Thank you, East York.

Bruce Herzog, chief executive officer

Christian Children's Fund of Canada
